Nigerian singer, Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, won her second Grammy award by clinching the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammys on Sunday, February 2nd,2025,in Los Angeles ,USA.
She beat other Nigerian artists like Davido, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Asake, who were nominated in the same category.
Tems’ hit song ‘Love Me Jeje’ emerged victorious over “Tomorrow” (Yemi Alade); “MMS” (Asake & Wizkid); “Sensational” (Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay); and “Higher” (Burna Boy).
“Love Me Jeje”, a sample of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same title, has received critical acclaim from global music buffs following its release last April.
The category that was introduced into the awards has seen women winning it back-to-back.
South African singer, Tyla won the maiden award last year with her global hit “Water.”
Tems, a Nigerian is now the second person,a woman, winning the award this year.
She however missed out on her two other nominations, the Best R&B song, which SZA won with the song “Saturn” and the Best Global Music Album, won by Matt B featuring Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Alkebulan II”.
