The political crisis in Rivers State has now escalated as impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has been initiated by the Rivers State Assembly, who are citing allegations of gross misconduct in office.
The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule and 26 lawmakers have submitted a notice accusing Fubara and Odu of violating constitutional provisions in the discharge of their duties. The legislators cited reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstruction of legislative activities, and making appointments without proper legislative screening and confirmation.
Ther also alleged that the governor withheld salaries and allowances meant for the legitimate House of Assembly and its Clerk, Emeka Amadi.
The impeachment notice was forwarded to Governor Fubara by the Speaker,who stressed that the allegations were backed by more than one-third of the Assembly’s membership, while reminding the governor of his right to respond, referencing to Section 188(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the Assembly to decide within 14 days whether to proceed with an investigation.
