Sime senior Gabonese military officers have taken over power in Gabon.
In a broadcast announcing the seizure of power, these
officers speaking in Gabonese claimed their action was as a result of the need to strengthen all of Gabon’s security and defence forces, asserting their authority over the nation.
The officers went on to announce the cancellation of the country’s election results, because of widespread discontent and dissatisfaction with the electoral process and the administration of 64- year-old President Ali Bongo, who succeeded his father as president in 2009.
The election result had seen the incumbent leader victorious in the presidential election, with over 60% of the vote as released by the country’s election centre, this securing a third term for him.
Following the coup, the officers went on to close all borders until further notice, and dissolved state institutions.
Tensions escalated following the officers’ announcement,as gunfire could be heard in the capital city, Libreville.
The officers expressed their determination to protect peace in Gabon by bringing an end to the current regime.
