Tina Turner,one of the music world’s female rock’n’roll stars has died.
She passed on at the age of 83, after a long illness.
For some years, Tina had suffered ill health after being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016. She had undergone a kidney transplant in 2017.
Her death was announced on Wednesday night by her publicist, Bernard Doherty, with a statement saying that “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83, after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
Tina,who, after two decades of working with her abusive husband, Ike Turner, with whom she was in a musical partnership soon struck out alone and caught her big break with ‘Private Dancer’, after a few false starts.
She became one of the defining pop icons of the 1980s with the album.
Turner affirmed and amplified Black women’s formative stake in rock’n’roll, defining that era of music.
Turner is survived by her second husband, German music executive, Erwin Bach. They married in July 2013 , after 27 years together, and lived in Switzerland. In 2013, Turner renounced her US citizenship to become a Swiss citizen.
Also surviving her are two of Ike Turner’s sons, Ike Turner Jr and Michael Turner, whom she adopted.
Her first child, Craig Raymond Turner, died at the age of 62 in July 2018.
