New Lagos Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda Resigns

Forty nine days after Honorable Mojisola Meranda assumed office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, she has put in her resignation. Her decision to resign was reached following a meeting with the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, APC Lagos Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, and the State’s Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro.
Honorable Meranda stated that her reason for stepping down from her position as Speaker was to uphold the integrity of the legislature, as she reaffirms her commitment to serving her Apapa 1 constituency. Hear her,“With this in mind, I officially step down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective March 3, 2025.”She also described her short tenure as historic, being the first female Speaker in the assembly’s history.
Meranda acknowledged the political dynamics surrounding her election as Speaker and emphasized that her resignation was not a sign of weakness but a step to prevent unnecessary conflicts and embarrassment, as well as a conscious decision to protect the integrity of the institution.
She was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker of the assembly.
