Legendary Singer, Onyeka Onwenu Has Died

Iconic Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, popularly known as the Elegant Stallion has died.
According to reports from eye witnesses, Onyeka, who had just given a great performance at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, had stepped down from the stage to take her seat, where she reportedly slumped, following the performance on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, but didn’t recover and died.
The news of her passing shocked many who witnessed the sad incident at the party when it happened, with one eyewitness saying she had just given a very given a very energetic and amazing performance, left the stage, only to slump when she got to her seat.
The sudden death of Onyeka Onwenu, the Imo-born music icon, has caused a lot of reactions in the world of entertainment and beyond, leaving many speechless.


Notable among top Nigerian artistes who have reacted following the sad news of Onyeka’s death include Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, who took to X, formerly Twitter, to pay tribute to the late Onwenu.
He wrote: “The Igbo nation mourns the loss of this iconic figure, whose impact transcended the entertainment industry.
“Onwenu’s death follows the recent passings of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, marking a period of profound loss for the Southeast region of Nigeria.
“Onwenu’s legacy as a cherished talent and tireless advocate will continue to inspire future generations.
Oh! My sister, Rest In Peace 😢.”
Also reacting is Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, who expressed his shock at the sad news.
He posted this message; “Shocked, waking up to very sad news of the passing of Mrs Onyeka Onwenu 🕊💔🕊.
“Rest in peace Ma, your beautiful voice will live forever. Condolences to her family and loved ones.”

Another popular Nigerian artiste, Daddy Showkey, shared a picture of Onyeka on his Instagram page, and wrote: “RIP Great Legend Onyeka Onwenu.
“Nobody know the news wey you go hear when you wake up in morning.”
Onwenu was a beloved figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, who was respected for her musical talent and impactful acting career.
Born on January 31, 1952, Onwenu started her career as a singer and her distinctive voice and music, which often addressed social issues,brought her fame.

She was soon known as the “Elegant Stallion” for her grace and style.
She was also a talented actress,who stared in several Nollywood films.
Aside entertainment, Onwenu was a renowned journalist and politician.
She was appointed the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016. She was awarded the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.Her contributions to the music and film industries, as well as her advocacy for women’s rights and social justice, made her an iconic figure in Nigeria and beyond.

She died at the age of 72 and is survived by her sons and family.
