The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed the arrest of Martins Innocent Otse ,popularly known as Very Dark Man.
According to them ,they are claiming that his arrest is as a result of what they termed as, “grave allegations of financial malfeasance,” following his repeated refusal to honour several invitations extended to him.
In a statement issued by the Commission on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said Otse was invited in connection with a series of petitions it received, all bordering on alleged financial crimes.
Following the reactions that have erupted since the arrest, calling for VDM’s release, the EFCC is telling Nigerians to refrain from speculating about its motives and allow it to carry out its constitutional duties.
The EFCC in their statement said,
“Martins Innocent Otse was invited owing to a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes raised against him”.
“He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him,” the statement read.
The EFCC ,however, denied the arrest being in connection to the “several unguarded attacks” made by Otse against its operations, hence, his arrest was not motivated by those actions, they claimed.
The anti-graft agency also insisted it acted within the law by detaining Otse, that a valid remand order was obtained to keep him in custody while investigations continue.
The EFCC statement further said that,
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission. The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard.”
The Commission said Otse has been offered administrative bail and would regain his freedom upon meeting the bail conditions, while assuring that, “as soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.”
