Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), has reacted to the clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and a Nigerian Navy officer.
Buratai described the incident on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday as, “a clear and present danger to national security”.
He said Wike’s behavior “transcends mere misconduct” and “undermines the authority of the Commander-in-Chief and the integrity of the Armed Forces.”
Buratai believes
The clash occurred at Plot 1946, Gaduwa District, Abuja,over a land ownership dispute and development rights, allegedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff.
Accompanied by senior officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Wike had visited the site to halt what he described as an “illegal construction”, when he confronted a naval officer at the site of the land in question.
The video that captured the clash has since gone viral, showing Wike challenging the officer and his men’s presence on the land,and his audacity to stop the minister’s people from shutting down work on the site .
Wike was captured saying,
“You are in uniform, and you’re telling me that the Navy owns this land? Who gave you the right to build without approval? Even if you are the Chief of Naval Staff, the law must be respected”.
The young officer,who had on a tag name that showed his name is Yerima, responded, saying that the said property belonged to a former service chief and that the military had authorisation to protect it.
His response led to an outburst on the part of Wike,who went on to call him derogatory names,which the young officer refused to be so called.
The young officer’s reaction to Wike’s insolent outburst has been receiving mixed reactions from Nigerians .
While there are some who felt the young officer’s response was rude to the Minister,many, however, have been applauding him for his courage to stand up to Wike’s insulting outburst,since the officer was simply following orders from his superiors.
